WHO WE ARE

WE BECOME THE THINGS WE SPEND TIME FOCUSING ON.

UNDEREXPOSED ARTS is a not for profit, social enterprise, celebrating black British, dual heritage African/Caribbean talent and promoting aspiration through national arts-led initiatives.

We are committed to inspiring young adults and sharing of wisdom through our GEMS OF KNOWLEDGE hub

OUR PURPOSE

To deliver high profile artistic interventions and inspire young adults by the sharing of wisdom through our GEMS OF KNOWLEDGE hub. To build a platform for collaborations in order to facilitate positive representation and create inclusive opportunity.

OUR LEGACY

The Original Collection featured 30 portraits, captured by award winning visual artist Franklyn Rodgers, of inspiring actors from the black British diaspora through imagery and words, namely inspirational ‘Gems of Knowledge’ used in their daily lives. Conceived by actor Fraser James, UNDEREXPOSED was created to address a perceived lack of positive role models within the black community.

Installed in 2008, the portraits became an established fixture on hoardings on Peckham Hill Street. Now, as one of London’s longest running site specific installations, they were “treasured” by the local community, and became known as ‘The Peckham Portraits’. In 2017 they were removed by Southwark Council to make way for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts to be reinstalled at the PeckhamPlex, where they still remain.

More significantly, they became an established fixture, as a site specific art installation, on hoardings on Peckham Hill Street and Commercial Way. The portraits celebrated the talents of the artists and served as a means of inspiring young people to see the potential of possibility reflected back at them.

OUR FUTURE

In celebration of the overwhelming community response to the original exhibition. A new collection of UNDEREXPOSED portraits is being developed. UNDEREXPOSED: The Next Generation reflects on the meaning and value of The Originals and hopes once again to provoke inspiration and aspiration in communities that still feel marginalised.

UNDEREXPOSED ARTS, launches in Black History month, October 2019. At the centre of the launch will be the reinstatement the original of portraits at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

OUR FUTURE

With firm support in place from Southwark council, the new collection of portraits will have a permanent exhibition in the newly regenerated area of Peckham Square. Also expected are shorter site specific exhibitions of the installation as a nationwide tour.

Alongside new and emerging talent, award winning stars of international box office hits such as Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Black Panther are being invited to be featured in the new collection. As previously, they will be asked to provide a Gem of Knowledge to inspire a future generation.
