SOLILOQUI
‘The UK has a reputation for producing some of the world's most loved, award winning, period dramas but there is a dramatic gap in representation.
Culturally diverse stories and actors have been, for the most part, almost non-existent. UNDEREXPOSED ARTS inserts itself into this narrative by addressing the lack of diverse cultural representation. Our vision is to reveal the value and significance of being represented historically in those moments and stories that define our cultural heritage.
Soliloqui will be an ongoing, multi-episodic series of Soliloqui and interviews; an open space for artistic performance, classical speeches, new writing, spoken word, music & dance.
Artists will be invited to perform a Soliloqui, adorned in classic period costume, filmed on location and in green screen studio, where we can be transported through time and expand our understanding through the use of archival content.
In Soliloqui we are creating a new space for artists from culturally diverse backgrounds to tell stories of significance in the idea of the period drama.
The first in the series, HOME by Warsun Shire. Performed by Daniel Bowerbank will be launched here in October as part of our BHM activities. Watch this space.
MELININA
MASTERPIECES CAN COME FROM ALL CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS. We are passionate about people and their stories and how the impact of placing these can inspire.
For UNDEREXPOSED ARTS, having a space to not only preserve but present our past, present and future work is critical to securing the impact of our legacy.
MELININA is UNDEREXPOSED ARTS proposal for a permanent digital structure and curated space that will both be a home for UA original collections and be open to invited artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to contribute to the value of representation and diversity within the arts on a public platform.
We want to connect and share in an open conversation from artists, to art, to articulation, to connect and resonate with the community and the surrounding environment, on a physical platform.
The innovative structure will be contemporary, inspirational and reflect our ethos, aims and our goals in an open dialogue. It will symbolise a call to action and be a point of reflection.
A structure to explore art, creating a hub from which the public can engage with the work of artists from culturally diverse backgrounds with different perspectives. We would like it to be a beacon that will evolve through it’s collective use, becoming a pivotal point to meet at and gravitate to.’
THE NEXT GEN:
THE PECKHAM PORTRAITS
ONE OF THE UK’S LONGEST RUNNING
SITE-SPECIFIC PUBLIC ART EXHIBITIONS
Building on the success of the Peckham portraits and reacting to the impact of our relevance in this time of change, this second iteration, ʻThe Next Genʼ, once again captured by Franklyn Rodgers, expands on the legacy of the now iconic portraits and underpinning our core beliefs, focuses our new collection on the idea of being inspired. We want our next generation of viewers to see possibility and the reflection of themselves in The Next Gen collection and the inspirational careers our artists have chosen. Our aim is to celebrate the dynamic range of cultural contributors whose talent and skills make distinct contributions with pivotal roles in the delivery of how we connect to the stories that shape us. Our invited artists will come from the Worlds of Film & TV, Music and Art. We’ll also make visible the often unseen creatives who are in the early stages of, or have carved a successful path in, their chosen profession within the creative arts.
GEMS OF KNOWLEDGE
In 2008 we asked invited artists to provide a Gem Of Knowledge (GEM) to be displayed alongside their portrait. Their chosen GEM would be a phrase, a feeling, an idea. Something they would like to pass onto our audience to inspire. Our artists GEMS have been hugely successful and in 2021 we'll be asking our invited artists to once again give us a Gem Of Knowledge to inspire our next generation audience.
